What is a MESH product ?

A mesh is a grid of points used to describe terrain relief of a more or less large area. Each and every point defines a ground elevation which is triangulated with neighboring points to form surface made of thousands of basic triangles.
The more closer the grid points are (therefore the tightest is the mesh), the most precise is the relief. This is known as LOD (level of detail) in FSX.
The overall accuracy of the default european mesh in FSX is about 76 meters (LOD9) which means that the grid points ar spaced 76m from each other. The vast majority of commercial meshes offers a resolution of up to LOD11 or 19 meters.
The NEXTMesh EUROPE Series is a LOD13 and provides a 4.75m resolution, which represents the smallest details of the ground. It is the only one to offer such precision over entire countries!

What does a MESH product bring to FSX ?

Whatever the add-ons already installed in your simulator, a mesh will improve the accuracy of terrain relief and thus the visual rendering in both default or enhanced sceneries.

What happens if I already have a MESH product over NEXTMESH EUROPE area ?

Meshes are automatically recognized and sorted/prioritized by FSX engine ! No conflict can occur between two meshes installed in the same area because no mixing is possible. Only one of them will be rendered for each location. If two meshs are active in the same area, it is the highest resoluted one that will be displayed. If both are of the same resolution then the first one (declared the lowest in the library) will be displayed and the othe ignored.

How does a MESH product interfere with my other scenes already installed ?

A addon MESH will modify terrain relief rendition, by improving details and accuracy with real data. All the scenery addons installed in the area covered by the mesh will have their relief improved (except if the scenery addon already embed a higher resomution mesh)

Can a MESH generate side effects with any scenery ?

A high resolution MESH can generate cliffs effects around airports. This is caused by FSX flattening the airports areas. At flatten border one recovers actual altitude over 5 meters. With default mesh this gap will spread over 76m. For addon airports this side effect is rather easy to fix but better advise publisher in case of such effect.

Is it necessary to change the order in the scenery library after installing a MESH product ?

When y install a new scenery, regardless of the type, usualy a new line is added at the top of your scenery library. This means that the corresponding scene will last load when starting a flight. The order of declaration of a mesh does not matter so much because FSX automatically detects terrain data and therefore will load before 3d sceneries, but it is safer to lower the mesh line just over FSX default sceneries.

I get sort of cliffs surrounding some airports : is it normal ?

A high resolution MESH can generate cliffs effects around airports. This is caused by FSX flattening the airports areas. At flatten border one recovers actual altitude over 5 meters. With default mesh this gap will spread over 76m.

What parameters must I modify to get the best MESH rendition ?

To fully enjoy the actual MESH resolution it is important to check that mesh resolution in display properties is set to half the actual resolution. Eg for NEXTMesh EUROPE countries 2 meters. For full Europe bundle the correct value is 10m. Mesh complexity should be set to 100%

Is it possible to turn off some areas so the MESH does not display them without uninstalling the complete MESH ?

All NEXTMesh EUROPE are splitted in files covering 0.5° x 1° surface. Each file is named according to the coordinates of the lower right corner, it’s easy to disable the areas just turning ‘.bgl’ to ‘.ori’ in the filename. Only entire files can be disabled.
